Our Mission

Jesus Christ said "all authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to me therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey all that I have commended and lo I am with you even to the end of the age". (Matthew 28)

A few things that I would like to point out here:

1. All authority in Heaven and on Earth belong to Jesus Christ, so when he commands us to do something we had better take note of it!

2. His authority goes with us as we obey this command to make disciples "I am with you", this is an amazing reality as we go and make disciples of Christ, we are not going it alone or outside of authority. We are under His perfect authority as we carry out this command!

3. The word "baptize" is a Greek word that literally means to "fully identify with" (e.g. if I were to take a white cloth and submerse it into a red die until it took on the full red color before taking it out I would have baptized it into the red)

4. The Greek word for name literally means "authority", this means that we are to be identifying disciples of Christ with the authority of the Father, the Son and of the Holy Spirit and in this way send them out to do the same to others! (See blog post titled "Baptism" for more info)

5. Christ said to teach them how to obey His commands not what those commands are! It is not part of our mission to teach the commands of Christ, we are however commanded to teach people how to obey them. This command taken at its true meaning would drastically change how most churches today would handle the word of God. Instead of teaching the commands why don't we focus on teaching people how to obey the ones they already know!

I hope this helps to unlock the "Great Commission" for you in a way that makes good practical sense for you . If we start to live this command in the way Christ meant it we would be rapidly making functioning disciples of Christ and functioning Churches!

Baptism

Water symbolic Christian baptism could be classified into two interrelated categories.

Making Disciples: Every believer is commanded to make disciples. Baptism is one of three commands given to each believer to be observed through the functioning church as part of making disciples (i.e. the command commonly known as the Great Commission). Thus, every obedient believer should strive to become a discipler and baptize a disciple of Christ. They are also commanded to go and teach Disciples of Christ to obey all the commands of the Bible. In order for someone to be recognized as a Disciple of Christ by the church, they must have received the gift of grace through faith (i.e. go), have been biblically baptized (i.e. baptize), and have a heart of submission to be taught to obey all the commands of the Bible (i.e. teach).

An Ordinance: An ordinance is a physical action that pictures a spiritual reality that is to be repeatedly performed. Water baptism is also an ordinance to be repeatedly performed by every disciple and discipler. Every believer can and should baptize Disciples of Christ in order to be obedient to God’s command given to each and every individual believer, but only under and through the God-ordained authority of the functioning church. The emphasis of baptism is on the one in which the command was given (i.e. the one who is to baptize) – not the recipient of baptism.

Because of these understandings it should be common for the Disciples of Christ in a functioning Church to baptize one another over and over. This gives the disciples the opportunity to be obedient to the command to baptize as a part of fulfilling the great commission whenever this ordinance is observed by the church.

Form and Function

One of the many aspects that holds the modern Church back in their honest efforts to make disciples of Jesus Christ is their dedication to "Form" over "Function".

The function of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Form should be what a local body of Christ does in order to facilitate that function.

Most Churches in this age spend more time in obedience to the form that there Church has implemented (i.e Sunday morning service attendance, Wednesday night youth services/fellowship dinners, 20 minutes of worship, 20 minute sermons etc.) that no one ever stops to ask, "is our form really accomplishing our function (making disciples)?

My challenge to you would be to ask that question and then literally throw out every practice that is not accomplishing your goals as a body of Christ! If it is not accomplishing the goal it is a waste of resources. Question everything that you do as a Christian so see if your resources are producing the fruit that you need to see in your life and the life of your Church.

Don't get caught up in obedience to your traditions as they have no intrinsic spiritual value! Stay focused on obedience to the commands of Christ to make disciples and love your neighbors as yourself!

Worship Thoughts

The child of God is called to worship Him through obedience to His commands. Jesus said that “he who loves me will obey my commands”. If one looks to the bible to discover what it means to truly “worship” God in this dispensation they will find that there are two distinct words used in the New Testament, one that if exclusively used while God was physically present in ones midst (i.e. the Gospels and Revelation) and another used when He was not (the rest of the New Testament excluding Revelation when the author reverted to the use of the Greek word that was used for “worship” in the Gospels!).

In short, the Greek word used in the Gospels and Revelation means to pay homage/honor to one who is physically in your midst and the word used in the rest of the NT literally means to show respect by obeying commands! This would lead any student of the Bible who applies correct hermeneutics to the conclusion that since God is not physically in our midst during this dispensation we are commanded to “worship” (i.e. show respect by living a life of obedience) Him. And when Christ returns to gather us from the earth we will once again “worship” Him by paying homage as He will literally be in our midst.

Sermons?

We believe that is it the Holy Spirits role in the believers life to teach and remind us of God’s Word not the Pastors. So how does an individual approach God's Holy Word and ensure their understanding is from God? The only way that a sinful individual in a sinful environment can understand any spiritual truth, is if God teaches/reveals the Truth (i.e. God’s Word) to them (1st Corinthians 2:6-16).

In this present Church era, the Christian is taught and reminded of scripture by one of the three persons of the Godhead – the Holy Spirit (John 14:26). As the Holy Spirit teaches and illuminates His Word to the child of God, they are transformed by the renewing of their minds into the image of Christ (Romans 12:1-4). It is Truth (i.e. God’s Word) that is illuminated to the child of God by the Holy Spirit.

So the Christian’s hermeneutic (how the student can properly understand or interpret scripture) is the Holy Spirit illuminates truth (i.e. teaches and reminds one of God’s Word). The Holy Spirit is the perfect Teacher and Reminder of His perfect Word. But, as long as the Christian’s sin nature and/or the effects of a sinful environment continue to affect the Christian’s interpretation of the Bible, there is a need for protection against misinterpretation which will provide assurance that what is understood of scripture is truly from our Communicator (i.e. Holy Spirit).

Building or no building?

As we have tried to figure out how to function best in order to be obedient to the great commission (i.e. Matt 28:18-20) and the two Ordinance commands we have concluded that a building would hinder us in that pursuit more than aid in it. Since we have no building we are freed to use all of the time, finances and other resources that we have to aid in us accomplishing the obedient lifestyle that we desire to live. Since there is no building when a functioning church (i.e. local church) does gather together it is usually in homes or a rented facility. We put very little finances, time, or energy in the facility in which we meet. We put most of these resources toward the church (i.e. believers). This is consistent with our Faith and Doctrine that the people (i.e. believers) are the church – not a building or place of gathering.

The Ordinance Commands

“Ordinance,” for our purposes here; is going to be defined as follows:

“A command given to the Church by the Lord Jesus Christ toward the end of His earthly ministry that entails a specific physical action that is meant to correctly represent a spiritual reality and is to be repeatedly preformed.”

The only two commands that are found in scripture that meet the above criteria are the “Baptism” command and the “Lords Super”, “Upper Room”, or “Communion” commands.

I will cover Baptism in a future article; the purpose of this article is to explain in short, what I will refer to as the “Lords Supper”.

We will start with the gospel of John where our Lord washes the feet of His disciples in the upper room of a house that had been prepared for them to celebrate in the night before His crucifixion. They were in the middle of eating the evening meal when Jesus got up and began to wash the feet of His disciples. When it came time for Peter to have his feet washed he immediately refused saying that Jesus would never wash his feet, Jesus replied that if He did not wash Peter’s feet than Peter had no part in His Kingdom. Peter, understanding the implications of what Jesus had said replied, “then Lord wash not only my feet by my whole body as well”, Jesus then said that Peter only needed his feet washed because he was already “clean”.

Now, to the modern Christian this presents some difficult concepts. We must go back to the Jewish culture of the day where in order for one to be ceremonially clean they had to wash their head and hands before eating, not their feet. It would be a correct assumption that Peter and the rest of the disciples had already washed their heads and hands before entering the room to eat, therefore what Jesus was doing by washing their feet was showing that they were already “clean” from a ceremonial perspective. There would have been no reason to wash only their feet if this had not been true.

This act corresponds perfectly to that of the High Priest in the OT when going into the Holy of Holy’s to offer sacrifice for the sins of Israel, he would first wash his head and hands in the laver to make himself “clean” before entering the Holy Place.

This act of washing one another’s feet shows that we are already clean and ready to enter the Holy Place to offer sacrifice to God for our sins.

The next part of this Ordinance command is to eat the bread; this bread symbolizes the body of Christ that was broken for us. His body, when it broke, tore the curtain that divided the Holy of Holy’s from the people. And when we eat the bread we are supposed to remember that Jesus’ sacrifice opened the “way” to God.

The wine or “fruit of the vine” comes next. Once the High Priest entered the Holy of Holy’s he had to have a blood offering to atone for the sins of Israel, the blood of an un-blemished lamb. Christ’s blood sacrifice serves as that perfect un-blemished blood that seals the covenant between us and God. This blood seals the New Covenant between God and Mankind and the wine/fruit of the vine is meant to help us remember this reality.

Lastly we celebrate the Agape feast or love feast which reminds us of the fellowship that we share because of Christ’s sacrifice, not only with God but with our fellow Christians as well. This feast is in line with the feast that the nation of Israel had once a year when the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holy’s to offer sacrifices for Israel, once completed, the Israelite nation would have a huge feast/party to celebrate it’s unity with their God, they were once again Gods people and He was their God!

The foot washing, the Bread, the Cup and the Agape Feast, a full and complete picture of our everlasting relationship with the Almighty God of the Universe! When done in this order and according to the scriptures it causes us to remember, however often we do it, that we are God people and He is our God!

In closing I would like to offer the words of the Lord Jesus Himself in the midst of commanding His Church to perform these acts in His memory:

“Whoever does these things will be blessed”

1. Feet Washing -- The symbol of Christ's ministry of sanctification.

o Where it's mentioned: John 13:1-17; 1st Timothy 5:10.
o Authorized by Christ: John 13:3-6.
o Its meaning: John 13:7-11.
o Command to continue: John 13:13-15.

2. The Bread and cup -- The symbol of Christ's past ministry of justification.

o Where it's mentioned: Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:14-20; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17; 11:23-25.
o Authorized by Christ: 1 Corinthians 11:23-25.
o Its meaning: Matthew 26:26-28; 1 Corinthians 11:25-27.
o Command to continue: Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24-25.

3. Love Feast -- The symbol of Christ's future ministry of glorification.

o Where it's mentioned: John 13:2, 4; 1 Corinthians 11:20-22, 33-34; Jude 12.
o Not the same as bread and cup: Matthew 26:20-29; Luke 22:14-23; 1 Corinthians 11:20-22.
o Apostles continued to practice the meal: 1 Corinthians 11:17-34; Jude 12.
o Its meaning: 1 Corinthians 11:34; Revelation 19:7-10.

The Tithe

The Tithe in the Church age is something of a total quandary to me. Once I began to actually study the Bible I discovered something of great interest concerning the whole tithing concept that I would like to share with you all today.

First we need to understand when and why God chose to implement a tithe and what a tithe is.

When Moses lead the Israelites out of Egypt at Gods command and with His help, God gave moses the "law" we can read about the law and all its coming about in the first five books of the old testament. In the book of Leviticus God established a line of Priests, all of the males in this family (The Levites) would be responsible the temple and the sacrifices to God to make sure that the nation of Israel stayed in good standing with it's God.

You see the "Old Covenant" was a covenant or "if you, then I will", basically God said to them "if you obey me than I will protect you and bless you", then in Gods grace and mercy he set up a system of atonement (i.e. making sure that even if they sinned against Him they could seek forgiveness and come back into Gods protection).

In a nut shell, He gave them the Levites, the priest or mediators between the Israelites and God. They were not allowed to hold secular jobs or professions as their sole responsibility was to mediate between God and His people.

Since the Levites had no ability to make money or other means of providing for their families physical needs and also needed money to take care of their Priestly responsibilities God set up a way for them to get the provisions that they need... the Tithe, Numbers 18.

In the New Covenant we are all Priests! We have a Mediator, the High Priest, Jesus Christ who sits on His throne to represent us to The Father and continually offers Himself as a sacrifice for our sins! In the New Covenant we have no need for a Priesthood to intercede for us to God. Therefore, the Old Covenant command of a tithe is no longer valid and I gaurantee you that if the Apostles were hear today they would be very confused as to why we do it.

Basically here is what happened... the rise of the Roman Emperor Constantine. In about 300 ad he converted to Christianity and saw that it was a good religion for controlling the masses so he declared it the "state religion of Rome" when he did that he built buildings designed to make everyone come together in central public places where he could gain influence in the most efficient way and he created a group of men that were all political figures, had great influence, money and education (he labeled them "Priests"). After that he had them begin to teach the parts of the Old Covenant laws that would be beneficial to the Roman Empire as well as start to come up with other "laws" and impose them in the New Covenant Churches.

This was not hard to do as most people did not have the education they would need to read the biblical manuscripts (the common language had changed) or access to them (this was WAY before the printing press or anything like it was invented) and all of the Apostles had died by now... he had a captive audience and no one to combat him.

The tithe was a way of making extra money for the Empire from people who otherwise would have only payed taxes.... and extra 10% for the Empire, control of the masses' religious beliefs and practice, and a self imposed position of spiritual leadership. A great plan if power is your main and only concern. Constantine got exactly what we was trying to accomplish.

Up until his reign there is no record of Churches collecting a tithe, only Christians giving to one another as they had need as they understood from the Apostles that in this Church age you actually are commanded to give everything to the Kingdom of God and its advancement, your money, you time, your energy, your resources, you love, your everything!

So my main arguments against a tithe are:

1. It is not obedience to Gods commands as he never commanded us to do it.

2. Falls exceedingly short of what we are commanded to give our brothers and sisters in Christ (the Church) and created a false sense of obedience among "Church goers".

3. Most of what you give to your "Church" is not actually used to support the Body of Christ, it is used to support the building, staff, pastors salary, light and sound equipment etc. We are still acting like the Roman Catholics! Why do we even have those things let alone give our hard earned money to them instead of to the people in our Church family that are truly in need! There are people in your church body who are facing foreclosure on their homes, who have medical bills they can't pay, who would value an hour of your time encouraging them and praying with them more than your money!

4. By paying your "Tithes" you are doing nothing more than helping to continue the propagation of the faulty systems and ideals that Constantine established to gain power to the Roman kingdom..... why?


In closing I would like to say again: as New Covenant followers of Jesus Christ we have a much greater responsibility to our Church families than to give 10% of our income!

Stop tithing, start truly giving your all and in this way ignite change in your Church and help it to become a Functioning Church!

Faith - Doctrine - Practice

As Christians our faith should be coming from the same source and be in the same thing - God has given each of us the "seed" of faith in His word, the Bible, and the the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that it lays out from its beginning to its end.

From our faith our doctrine (i.e teaching) is determined. Basically we draw our doctrinal conclusions from whatever our faith is in... that is only logical. Muslims determine their doctrine from the Koran, Mormon's from the book of Mormon and the "Prophets" etc.

It would only make sense then to conclude that our "practices" should root in our doctrine and support both our "faith" and our "doctrine" so that each element of our lives are completely and equally supported by the other two.

The fundamental challenge that I have with the modern Protestant church is that its commonly held to "practices" do not line up with its "faith" or doctrine". And is therefore, slowly changing the common Christians doctrines to not line up with the Word of God, their faith, but instead lining up with the practices that are implemented in their church families and will eventually lead the church into a state of apostasy similar to the Catholic church just prior to Martin Luther's Reformation!

Over the course of these articles I am going to address certain practices of the common Protestant Church that are not accomplishing the God commissioned goals for us, the church.

In each of these articles I am going to point out the practice, show you where it came from, why it was implemented in the first place, why it is no longer needed and/or was not needed in the first place and then offer a solution (i.e a practice to replace it with) that will in fact support our "Faith" and "Doctrine" and therefore preserve Biblical Christianity!
